Kimball Commemorates Historic 1903 Trans-Continent Trip
Kimball, Nebraska, May 27, 2026: On Saturday, June 6th, 1903, George A Wyman rode his single cylinder “California” brand motorcycle into Kimball at 6:50 p.m. It had been a tough rainy, muddy 65 mile trip from his starting point in Cheyenne. He stayed in Kimball overnight and surprisingly made his best mileage West of the Mississippi on the following day, 114 miles. With better roads and weather, he rode clear to Ogallala to include a slight jog thru Julesburg, Colorado. Wyman would eventually ride into New York, New York and become the first person to complete a trans-continent trip of North America using a gasoline powered vehicle. He would precede the first trans-continent automobile crossing by over 3 weeks. Unfortunately today, Wyman, although first, is an oft forgotten part of American transportation history.
The George A. Wyman Memorial Project (https://wymanmemorialproject.blogspot.com/) is dedicated to keeping the memory of Wyman and his historic 1903 trans-continent trip alive. Working with communities, organizations, businesses and individuals they are marking points along Wyman’s historic route with Waypoint signs, commemorative bronze plaques and Journey posters. Bringing the history of Wyman and his trip to the communities noted in his detailed trip journal.
In Kimball the Wyman Project has worked closely with Kim Nelson, Kimball County Visitors Liaison. Through her outreach efforts within the community, the Kimball Plains Historical Society stepped up not only to Host but also Sponsor the Wyman Waypoint for Kimball. Joe Sherman and Steve Schulte of the Historical Society have spearheaded these efforts.
On Saturday, June 6th, 2026, 123 years to the date that Wyman rode into Kimball, the Kimball County Visitor Committee and the Kimball Plains Historical Society invites you to attend the dedication of the George A. Wyman Waypoint for Kimball. The dedication will be held at the new Plains Historical Society Museum Annex, 200 S. Chestnut St, Kimball, Nebraska, at 1:00 p.m. Come and learn about the new Wyman Waypoint in Kimball, Wyman’s time in Kimball and details of his historic trans-continent trip.
